The Multiport Valve (MPV) is the versatile control unit mounted directly onto your sand filter, functioning as the brain of your filtration system. It directs the flow of water to manage all essential pool maintenance tasks, giving you complete control over cleaning and circulating your water simply by moving the lever handle.
How It Works
The MPV contains multiple internal ports (channels) that allow water to be routed in several directions: through the filter, in reverse for cleaning, or bypassing the filter entirely.
Key Operating Functions:
FILTER (Normal Operation): This is the everyday setting. Water is pushed down through the sand media where dirt is trapped, and then the clean water is returned to the pool.
BACKWASH (Filter Cleaning): This reverses the water flow, pushing the water upwards through the sand bed to dislodge trapped dirt, debris, and contaminants, which are then flushed out of the system via the waste drain line.
RINSE (Settling the Sand): Used immediately after a BACKWASH cycle. The water flows normally but is still sent to the drain to clear any remaining debris from the lines and properly settle the sand bed inside the tank for effective filtration.
WASTE (Draining/Heavy Vacuuming): This bypasses the filter entirely, sending pool water straight out to the drain. This setting is used to quickly lower the pool water level or to vacuum up large amounts of debris that you do not want contaminating the sand filter.
RECIRCULATE (Chemical Circulation): The water is drawn from the pool and returned to the pool without passing through the filter media. This is primarily used when dissolving and circulating chemicals quickly, or when the filter media needs to be left undisturbed.
CLOSED (System Off): This position stops all water flow through the valve and system. It is used when performing maintenance, such as changing the sand media or repairing the pump.
Important Safety Rule: You must always ensure the pool pump is turned OFF before you move the lever of the Multiport Valve. Changing the position while the pump is running can cause severe internal damage to the valve.
